Basic Cover Letter Rules

• You must write a new one for each application
• The addressee must be correct
• Do not cut & paste letter, employers can tell a “churned” cover letter
• The date must be correct
• They should never be more than one page long
• They should be as well laid out as your resume
• Do not state information in the cover letter which can be obtained from reading your resume.

Your resume should always be accompanied by a cover letter. A cover letter provides an opportunity to express your unique qualities and express your energy, enthusiasm and personality that may be difficult to express in the resume. Avoid putting clichés in your cover letter. At best they will disregard, at worst they will irritate and could cause you to miss out on an interview.

For example –“Have a nice day” is not acceptable.
