Select a format that best showcase your strengths in relationship to the employer’s needs. Three major formats.

1. chronological
2. functional
3. hybrid

The chronological resume which lists work history and related accomplishments in reverse chronological order
• for individuals who want to showcase their progressive work experience in a particular career or occupational field

The functional resume, which emphasizes key skills rather than specific employment experience, is ideal for individuals with
• little work experience
• who are changing career or occupational fields
• people with not-so-hot employment backgrounds
• people who have employment time gaps

The hybrid resume tries to marry the best of both words – emphasize progressive employment experience and skills sets is a good choice for individuals
• making a career change in a closely related career or occupational field
• who wish to emphasize their motivated abilities and skills in a separate section for capturing the attention of employers who are looking for patterns of behavior
• Best off creating chronological or hybrid resume

Avoid functional resumes, unless you lack experience or have something to hide!

• Many employers are suspicious of resumes that attempt to downplay evidence of progressive work experience
• Become red flags – they appear to be written by someone who is trying to hide something
• If you are consider developing a functional resume be prepared to explain your lack of progressive employment experience

Be cautious of well-meaning resume advice from friends, and even from so-called resume experts

• You will quickly discover, much of the advice will be contradictory and confusing for they don’t focus on your STRENGTHS

• Doesn’t mean you should write a different resume
• Your objective should guide you in customizing various sections of your resume in reference to the needs of specific employers
